ionysis starts development of catalyst coated membranes for water electrolysis

Feb 5, 2024

Green hydrogen from electrolysis is a rapidly growing market and key to a sustainable economy. ionysis is using its expertise in innovative catalyst coated membranes (CCMs) for heavy duty fuel cells to make electrolysis more efficient and cheaper.

Green hydrogen, which is produced using electricity from renewable energies and electrolysis, will be needed in large quantities in the future to make steel or fertilizer production sustainable. To achieve this, the production of electrolyzer systems must be scaled up to the gigawatt range. With this growth, the market volume of electrolysis is expected to be more than $34bn in 2030.

The innovative technology of ionysis is now also set to deliver its benefits in electrolysis. Catalyst-coated membranes based on PFAS-free polymers enable membrane-based electrolyzers to operate without rare and expensive catalysts. In addition, thinner and more efficient membranes can be used, which reduces electricity costs.

ionysis began its development activities earlier this year, also supported by a publicly funded project. In the process, ionysis can build on synergies and know-how from fuel cell development. Thanks to the very rapid development, the sampling program for first pilot customers has already been started.
